چکیده

A cross-sectional study examined the effect of meaning frequency, referred to as “dominance” in the semantic priming paradigm, where ambiguous words (primes) were processed in isolation. Participants made lexical decisions to target words that were associates of the more frequent (dominant) or less frequent (subordinate) meaning of a homograph prime. Participants were selected from 5th grade of primary school up to first year at university. We studied the difference between dominant and subordinate meaning frequency, called ‘polarity’. The SOA (Stimulus Onset Asynchrony) was 250 ms, implying only automatic processes. In younger students (5th and 8th graders), semantic priming was absent, whereas it was present in older ones (1st and 3rd year of Secondary, and 1st year University). Polarity was significant only in the 3rd year of secondary school. The influence of the missing semantic priming effect in the reading process, as seen in younger children, is discussed. © 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Priming bicultural bilingual Latino-Americans as Latino or American modulates access to the Spanish and English meaning of interlingual homographs

Using Spanish-English bilingual Latino-Americans, this study tested whether priming Latino or American cultural representations facilitated the accessibility of the Spanish meaning or English meaning of Spanish-English homographs. Seventy-four participants were randomly assigned to a Latino prime, American prime, or no prime condition. After being primed, subjects performed an English lexical d...

Do Spanish–English Bilinguals have Their Fingers in Two Pies – or is It Their Toes? An Electrophysiological Investigation of Semantic Access in Bilinguals

We examined the time course of cross-language activation during word recognition in the context of semantic priming with interlingual homographs. Spanish-English bilinguals were presented pairs of English words visually one word at a time and judged whether the two words were related in meaning while recording event-related potentials. Interlingual homographs (e.g., "pie": "Pie" in Spanish is a...

Semantic asymmetries are modulated by phonological asymmetries: evidence from the disambiguation of homophonic versus heterophonic homographs.

The present study investigated cerebral asymmetries in accessing multiple meanings of two types of homographs: homophonic homographs (e.g., bank) and heterophonic homographs (e.g., tear). Participants read homographs preceded by either a biasing or a non-biasing sentential context and performed a lexical decision on lateralized targets presented 150 ms after onset of the sentence-final ambiguou...

Hemispheric asymmetries in meaning selection: evidence from the disambiguation of homophonic vs. heterophonic homographs.

Research investigating hemispheric asymmetries in meaning selection using homophonic homographs (e.g., bank), suggests that the left hemisphere (LH) quickly selects contextually relevant meanings, whereas the right hemisphere (RH) maintains a broader spectrum of meanings including those that are contextually irrelevant (e.g., Faust & Chiarello, 1998). The present study investigated cerebral asy...
